L1, L2, and L3 are fire alarm system categories under BS 5839-1, defining coverage levels:

• L1: Full coverage, with detectors in all areas, including escape routes and rooms, ensuring early warning.

• L2: Detectors in high-risk areas and escape routes, offering targeted protection where fire is most likely.

• L3: Detectors in escape routes and adjoining rooms, focusing on life safety by ensuring safe evacuation.

L1 provides the highest protection, while L3 is the minimum for occupied buildings. The choice depends on risk assessment and regulatory requirements.

A conventional fire alarm system divides a building into zones, with detectors and call points wired to a control panel.

When triggered, the panel identifies the affected zone, but not the exact device, requiring manual investigation. These systems are cost-effective and ideal for smaller buildings with straightforward fire detection needs.
